Mabel Elementary School Garden
Located on Mabel School Road in Zionville, the Mabel Elementary School Gardens consist of two different garden plots. One garden is utilized by children from Kindergarten to 3rd grade and the other larger garden is mainly utilized by middle schoolers in Mr. Tidyman's Careers and Technology Education class.
About the Garden
The Mabel gardens are a collaboration between Mabel teachers, Mr. Richard Tidyman's middle school careers and tech ed classes, and Watauga County Cooperative Extension agents.
What's Growing
The garden for younger students features two raised beds that grow a variety of produce depending on the time of year. In spring, the beds are overflowing with lettuce and other greens. In the summer, a variety of potatoes are typically found growing. In the fall, students plant a variety of cold-hearty greens to tend to and enjoy through fall and winter.
The larger middle school garden features 10 raised beds, blueberry and raspberry bushes and a couple apple trees. It also has a working compost system that recycles pre-consumer organic material (food scraps from kitchen prep) into nutritious soil for the garden.
