 Learning Station Descriptions & Resources
participants will be grouped based on the age group they work with and will rotate through each learning station
STATION 1:
Explore the Farm & Meet the Farmer

Learn more about springhouse
The farmhouse and barn were built from chestnut in the late 1800s on a site where Indians came to make arrowheads from the granite found on the land. The farm, which was originally 45 acres, supported a family of five. Amy Fiedler chose the name, Springhouse Farms, because of the springhouse which still exists, which originally cooled food by utilizing the water from a nearby spring.

Amy and her family have been the keepers of the land for the past six years. Amy raises certified organic vegetables which are sold at the Boone Farmers’ Market, New River Organic Growers, Appalachian Regional Healthcare System Wellness Program, and to local restaurants and grocery stores.

STATION 3:
TECHNOLOGY IN THE GARDEN:  From Passive Solar to Smart Phones
Resources to integrate technology into your school garden
Learn how to utilize technology in your school garden with Shannon Carroll.  Explore a variety of season extension techniques and useful technology tools to document, analyze and share what’s happening in the garden and greenhouse.

Shannon Carroll brings rich experience as a retired teacher/technology specialist, gardener and co-owner of SunCatcher Passive Solar Greenhouses. She helped establish the school garden at Mabel School and now serves as our Garden Coordinator at Parkway School. She retired from Watauga County Schools in 2013 and is currently dividing her time between a part-time educational technology consultant position, working part-time as the Lettuce Learn garden coordinator for Parkway School and helping with SunCatcher website updates, office management, communications and testing of the SunCatcher Jr. prototype.
