Good Bug, Bad Bug

9/10/2015

If you're spending your precious garden time squishing bugs, it's important to remember that not all bugs are bad! Some bugs are extremely beneficial for our gardens. Sometimes, good bugs can be disguised as bad bugs.

Let's talk about a favorite (and often misunderstood); the Ladybug.

Ladybug eggs look a little weird, let's be real.  They are bright yellow, spindle shaped and they stand neatly on end.

The first time you see a ladybug in the larval stage, you might freak out a little bit.  It looks a little scary...intimidating....gross. Does this little critter look anything like a ladybug?

Oh, there's the cute little guy we all know so well!

Let this be a lesson to you....don't be so quick to judge! Just because it's ugly doesn't mean it's bad! This is  a common misconception. Didn't your mother ever teach you to not judge a book by its cover? Ladybugs will eat all kinds of bugs that we don't want in our gardens - like aphids! Make sure you do your research before you get out there and start squishing bugs or spraying your garden down with harmful chemicals.
