A couple of weeks ago, we started revamping an old garden area by the basket ball hoops. We worked on clearing brush from the hill; it was covered in multiflora rose, brambles and vines. We cut it all back to give the garden a little more light and with the idea that we could plant a pollinator garden on the slope next spring.
We also weeded and worked on breaking up the compacted soil in the beds with the broad fork. We then planted cover crops to help add nutrients and organic matter to the soil for next spring. In addition we are hoping that this helps to break up the soil a bit more. The cover crop has started coming up -- the crimson clover looks great. I may plant a bit more of the winter rye and some more peas . We decided to do a bed of each and are hoping that once they get going, folks will start to notice that things are happening in the space. I'll post some pics soon! |
